A foreign ship carrying cargo collided with an Indian vessel only 10KM off the Mumbai City harbor. This resulted in the leakage of nearly 50 tonnes of oil that spilt from the vessel into the water. Nearly 300 containers carrying the oil barrels have spilled into the water and it is becoming worse as the days go by. Coastguard MSC Mitra stated, “This is a serious issue and we are doing all that we can to ensure that this does not become a situation that gets out of hand”.
The Navy and Coast Guard are currently doing their level best to ensure that the leakage does not reach other parts of the Mumbai City shores. There have been reports coming in that the oil has spread upto Vashi and is already creeping up on shores.
Fishing associations have put fisheries on a hold and have been informed that no fishing will be done till the Mumbai Oil Spill fiasco has been taken care of. The source of the leakage is yet to be identified and as soon as it is done, measures will be taken. The Directorate General of Shipping has asked to probe the situation and find out why the two vessels collided with each other. However, before the reason for the cause can be found out, it is imperative that the spread of the Mumbai Oil Spill be taken care of. There is a serious risk that has been posed on marine life as well as water bodies. The Coast Guard is doing all they can to ensure that the Mumbai Oil Spill is taken care of before it can reach other parts of the coastline.
