Most of the leaders of Mumbai political parties kept away from the funeral ceremony. Apparently they feared triggering of controversies and criticisms over their attendance in the funeral of someone who killed a noted leader of India. Only a few personal friends and some relatives of the widow Sarangi were present when Kapil, son of deceased was lighting the funeral pyres at Muktidharm crematorium in Thane amidst Vedic hymes being chanted.
“Mahajan family would bear all the medical expenses during his 82 days treatment in the IUC of Jupiter Hospital”, said Prakash Mahajan.
Prabin’s body was brought from the Sir J.J hospital in Mumbai to Thane after conducting an autopsy on Wednesday night and was handed over to the bereaved family on Thursday morning.
One would recall the ghastly incident of killing of Pramod Mahajan a well known political leader on April 22, 2006. The assassinated BJP leader was shot to death by his brother Prabin in his Mumbai residence. The high profile leader from BJP succumbed to the bullet wounds he suffered there on May 3rd, 11 days after suffering the wounds. Prabin was arrested and tried for the crime. The dramatic murder sent a shock wave throughout the country and across the globe.
Both print and electronic media gave extensive coverage to the incident when it took place. It was not only the local Mumbai news but turned out to be international news of Mumbai at that time. Many were surprised what prompted a brother taking the life of another brother. Some of the media also reported about the alleged mental torture by Pramod Mahajan and others on Prabin. However most of these stories remain unsupported with conclusive evidence.
Shortly after commitment of the ghastly crime Prabin walked to Worli police station and confessed about the crime committed. He was tried in the Sessions court that sentenced Prabin to life imprisonment in 2007 for fratricide.
During his stay in the jail, towards the end of 2009 he fell ill and went into coma. He remained in coma for nearly three months before finally succumbing to death on Wednesday evening.
